"Fill That Bus" Campaign to Begin January 4
On Jan. 4, the Hamilton City School District will begin a six-week service learning project designed to benefit the community while enhancing the district's Character Education efforts.
"Fill That Bus" organizers are asking each school building to collect enough nonperishable food and personal hygiene items to, well, fill a bus.
According to Zellene Miller, a member of the Character Planning Team that is heading the campaign, the result would be 20 buses delivering 88 boxes of food each to Shared Harvest Food Bank on Feb. 12.
"They (Shared Harvest) believe there will be a great need to replenish their food supply after the holiday season," Superintendent Janet Baker said in a letter, which — along with a shopping list of acceptable items — is being sent to parents this week. "In reinforcing the character trait of compassion, we are asking each household to help during this food drive if possible."
"We believe that through this project our children will learn that when they work together and demonstrate compassion, they can achieve truly great things and positively impact our community," she said.
Before the holiday break, students will fill out a survey to gauge their knowledge of hunger issues and the nature of compassion, one of the five character traits being taught in the Character Education program and the focus of "Fill That Bus."
