We will have many performances during the course of the year. Performances will include concerts, parades, and other musical activities as planned by the Band Director.
Performances are a mandatory element of the band. The main goal of our class is to learn to produce music suitable for public performance. Makeup work for missed performances will be assigned only if the student has an excused absence from the band director.
Examples of excused absences include:
- Severe illness with a doctor's excuse
- Family funeral
- Accident on the way to the performance
Parents should contact the Band Director immediately if the need arises for their child to miss a performance. EVERY STUDENT'S participation is important to the quality of the group's performance. The entire band suffers when people do not show up!
Family outings and work schedules must accommodate the student's availability to participate in all band performances . Any missed performances for these reasons will be treated as unexcused absences. Unforeseeable events beyond the student's control or any other personal reasons for missing a performance will be dealt with on an individual basis with the Band Director. An unexcused absence from a performance will result in a two-letter grade drop for each missed performance that quarter.
If a student is absent from school the day of a performance, we expect a phone call if the student will NOT be present at the program . You may leave a message at the school office or on the director's voice mail (896-3840). Be sure to include a telephone number where you may be reached and the times you will be available to accept a call . A WRITTEN EXCUSE from the parent is required upon returning to school after any absence from a performance. The Band Director will determine if the absence is excused or unexcused.
Students who are involved in other activities must give the band performances first consideration when conflicts arise. Remember, band is a graded class , not an extra-curricular activity.
NOTE: Sometimes the band may be asked to perform at a pep assembly . At these assemblies, the band will perform as students and faculty enter the gymnasium. All band students , including those who are members of athletic teams or other groups, will play with the band at this time. After the school song is played to begin the assembly, these students may join their respective groups.
