HHS Art Students field trip to Taft Museum and participation in the Mayerson Foundation Student Service Leadership Workshop

The Mayerson Foundation sponsored their 10th Student Service Leadership Workshop on Monday, October 8, 2007 at St. Xavier High School, 600 North Bend Road, Cincinnati, Ohio. The purpose of the workshop was to bring students and teachers together from as many high schools as possible to discuss school-sponsored service programs, exchange ideas, offer mini-workshops, and provide the opportunity to meet representatives from a wide-range of social service agencies. This year there were 48 schools and approximately 500 students or more and Hamilton High School was one of the schools.

Each year the Mayerson Foundation asks each school if they would be willing to bring a team to present a service-learning project that has made an impact on the students. This year Hamilton High's Mural Group through the Art Department consented to present. Now in its second year, the Hamilton High Mural Group uses art to promote positive change through community based artwork. Their previous project joined students from Hamilton High School and Miami University to create a custom mural for the Booker T. Washington Community Center. The goal was to help the community center beautify itself in light of recent renovations and make the stories of Booker T. Washington Community Center's rich history come alive through art. This goal allowed people of all genders, ages, and races to work together for a greater good. The goal as an organization was to allow art to foster communication and bring together groups of people who may otherwise not connect.
